THINGS I FIRMLY BELIEVE
Federal Conservative leader Erin O’Toole has declared that if he wins the next election he will immediately order a public inquiry into the Liberals’ handling of the pandemic. If Erin O’Toole wins the next election no inquiry will be necessary, the voters will have already decided that Trudeau and Tam messed up.
Politicians have always understood that all politics are local, but for generations now, by not caring about anything other than getting reelected, they have also rendered all politics short term.
WHAT’S JUSTIN SO AFRAID OF?
Like his father before him, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s disdain for Parliament is well known, but his continued refusal to allow members of his staff to testify before the commons ethics committee about WE Charity matters has elevated his destruction of parliamentary democracy to a new level. Because it just increases curiosity about what it is that he’s going to such great lengths to hide, his deviousness is also counterproductive. It’s already known that he and his family had unusually strong ties to WE and the Kielburger brothers, actually amounting to an unprincipled conflict of interest, so whatever he’s so afraid of must be particularly scandalous.
MITCH MCCONNELL SHOULD BE CAREFUL WHAT HE WISHES FOR
Reacting to the objection from a number of corporate CEOs over the State of Georgia’s changes to voting rules, US Senate Minority Leader, Mitch McConnell, scolded them them to “stay out of politics.” One way they can do that is to stop making contributions to the Republican Party.
CORPORATIONS DON’T PAY INCOME TAX
President Biden has made so much of his intention to significantly raise the US corporate income tax rate that he’s beginning to sound like Jagmeet Singh, and his Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, is championing a global minimum rate. Justin Trudeau, who enjoys spending our money almost as much as he enjoys listening to his own voice, thinks that’s a splendid idea. What leftist politicians don’t seem to get is that corporations don’t pay income tax, they simply collect and remit it on behalf of individuals. Every dollar of income tax that a corporation pays results in the company’s customers paying a dollar more for its products and services, their employees earning a dollar less, or shareholders receiving a dollar less in dividends.
THE PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE EXEMPTION
Speaking of income tax, some economists have urged the federal government to eliminate the principal residence exemption from capital gains tax as a means to reduce debt. Any government that does that will be out of power for at least a generation, maybe two.
THIS BUCK HAS BEEN PASSED MORE THAN A COLLECTION PLATE
In 2018, Military Ombudsman, Gary Walbourne, attempted to present evidence of sexual misconduct by then Chief of Defense Staff, Jonathan Vance, to Defense Minister, Harjit Sajjan, who refused to accept it. But Sajjan told Zita Astravas, his then Chief of Staff about the allegation, and she alerted the Prime Minister’s Office. The PMO then passed the issue to the Privy Council Office, which was headed at the time by Michael Wernick. A few days ago, Wernick testified before a parliamentary committee that he did nothing about it. Sajjan and Prime Minister Trudeau have both said they didn’t know about the allegation until a couple of months ago. Sajjan clearly lied, and Trudeau’s claim is simply not credible. Let’s take a look at the records of the main players
This is at least the second time that Sajjan has been caught in a big lie. In 2017 he stated he was “the architect” of a key 2006 battle in the Afghan war. The truth was he played an insignificant role. It’s interesting that one of Sajjan’s commanding officers at the time was Jonathan Vance, and apparently they’ve been close friends for some time. Michael Wernick “retired” shortly after he made contradictory statements while testifying during the SNC-Lavalin scandal. Trudeau’s record of evasiveness when questioned about anything is of truly Biblical proportions.
Wernick’s testimony about the Vance fiasco cleared up one thing. The buck has finally landed where it should, on Justin Trudeau’s desk.
JAGMEET SINGH’S WARPED REASONING
NDP leader, Jagmeet Singh, rightly refused to place on his party’s convention agenda this weekend a motion to disband the Canadian armed forces. But his reasoning raised more than a few eyebrows. He said he didn’t want to eliminate the military because they helped in the long-term-care situation and they may be useful in distributing vaccines during the pandemic. Not a word about their traditional roles. Egad!
