Communication Skills Training

The importance of good communications skills cannot be overestimated!

To the Organization

Taking the time to properly and adequately prepare and deliver a presentation or proposal may make the organization more money in an hour than a year of routine work, or prevent a public relations catastrophe.

To the individual

Competent, well-educated, talented people often find their career paths blocked because they can't effectively communicate their ideas. Effective communicators will become today's leadership elite.

The Training

Lyman uses five approaches to communication skills training.

1. Long course: One 3 1/2 hour session per week for 8 weeks.

Ideal number of people is twenty to twenty-five, (best with a group of staff and
executives from various levels - clerk to CEO). Every aspect of public speaking is covered, and each person speaks at least twice each session with everyone following the same assigned program each
week. They learn by doing.

2. Short course: One day
Deals primarily with delivery techniques. It is best suited to a homogeneous group of four or five people. It, too, is based on participation and learning by doing.

3. One-on-one:
The one-on-one training is completely tailored to the individual' s needs, both in terms of timing and content. It deals with the individual's strengths and weaknesses in sessions timed to fit his or her schedule. We cover everything from whether to accept an invitation to speak to the actual delivery of the talk.
Topics covered include preparation, appearance, audio visuals, introductions, tone, pacing, emphasis, reading a speech, question and answer periods, managing venues and all other aspects of delivering a talk.

4. Presentation-specific:
This involves working with an individual on a specific speech, or a group of people putting together a proposal. Lyman would assist with the planning and writing, rehearse and coach the speaker(s), attend the presentation and then debrief the speaker(s) with further suggestions and advice.
